Officials are looking into the drowning which occurred in a Fall River public pool to determine if the six lifeguards on duty acted improperly.
Initially unreported when this odd incident occurred, the story began when a boy evidently alerted lifeguards to the missing swimmer. The policies are reported to be clear that when a swimmer is reported missing, pool rules require lifeguards to immediately clear the pool to begin the search and call EMS if necessary.
But reports say lifeguards ignored her son's pleas to help search for his missing family friend, whom he watched sink into the murky deep end after he and Joseph went down a slide. But the pool was evidently never cleared and no search was ever undertaken, reports say. He eventually left the pool assuming she had gone home alone.
The woman, 36-year-old Marie Joseph, remained undiscovered and dead at the bottom of the Veteran's Memorial Pool for more than two days as scores of people swam nearby, reports say.
