Last month a 4-year-old-boy was pulled from the Roosevelt Outdoor Pool by a lifeguard. According to witnesses the boy’s body was “lifeless and limp.” The boy died at a local hospital a short time after being pulled from the water. The boy was visiting the pool with 19 other children through a day care center camp.
District officials have banned the summer camp groups from three pools following the death of the child. They want to review the policies of the pools because many summer camps make use of them regularly. Officials also stated that 12 lifeguards were on duty during the event. An official from the Department of Children and Family Services has started to review the case and said the group was chaperoned by eight center employees.
In addition, the day care center has suspended all pool-going activities until a thorough review of all policies has been conducted. The center also reported that they have brought in counselors to provide assistance to parents, staff members, and other children.
In order for camps to use the pool, the children are required to take a swimming test, and wear life jackets if they fail. These tests are general protocol due to safety and overcrowding in pools during summer. The day the child drowned, the pool had a reported 700 visitors. The pool is under review for whether the pool complies with regulations on lifeguard staffing and pool capacity.
